My name is Alice. This is my shameless self portrait. Kthxbai.
So, yeah, I'm entering this pretty cool self-portrait contest hosted by *x-EQ-x. normally, I don't really enter contests, but hey, he's a cool bro, and I like contests that allow some artistic freedom. Go enter the contest nao -> [link]
Wasn't too sure what to do with this. I asked my bros, and they all said that they thinkt of Alice in Wonderland and frilly clothing when they think of me. Yeaaaaaaahhhhhhh. >> I did like *LucyTenshi's idea, though. She said I should do something AiW related, but emphasizing the differences I have with the character. Well, kind of did that; mostly in the clothing. I went with an Alice-inspired color scheme, but used more dark blue, and a more modern look. The clothing is also based of real clothing I own, I just added some extra decals and ruffles to make it look more wonderland-esque. but scout pants and baseball socks are full of yes As for everything else, I just kind of did what I felt like. o3o
The scythe? That's my weapon of mass creation. See the pen nub at the bottom? I'm ready to do some serious arting.
Yeah, the way I executed the idea looks a little dumb, but It's infinitely better than most of the other ideas I had.
So, let's see. Picture of me? Check. Female? Recognizable? I think so. Check. Colored? Check. I think I'm ready to enter.
Not going to lie, I REALLY like this piece. The hair is beautiful, the clothes design (Alice in Wonderland inspired) are genius, the wrinkles in her clothes, the radiant scythe is way cool, the checkerboard floor is amazing, the trees... ... I have no words. AND the soft reflection of the trees in the tiles? NICE. The proportions are right, nothing is bending in a horribly weird way...
Design wise, this piece is amazing... What it lacks is just a little in technique. Her face is SUPER light and the shading is so soft that you can barely see anything other than her eyes. Her forehead also came out just a wee bit too far above her eye and gives her head a strange shape. Anatomically, she's mostly flawless, but from what I can tell, her wrists and her ankles are a little too thin. Thin is feminine, but the ankles especially push believability just a hair. She is also not holding the scythe at all. Granted, it is a magical scythe so maybe she doesn't have to, but it looks like it's just going to roll right out of her hand. The clothing, which, again, is excellent, has a few minor... quirks. The collar of her shirt should be sitting up higher on her neck, the buttons on her shirt are a little flat any little highlight to them would solve that, and you put a shadow... Under her belt and it shouldn't be there. In fact, light would be hitting that spot.
I could stare at the lighting till my eyes shrivel up and fall out and I still wouldn't be able to tell you if it's right or wrong, haha... That's the trouble with big glowy things, but however it's supposed to be, it looks good to me.
One other little thing is that she blends in with her background and it get's really hard to tell where she ends and the background begins (especially with her wrist and feet).
Anyhoo, again, this is beautiful picture and those trees... I love the character too but those trees are amazing. I don't know how you did that and I don't care, you did great work either way. X)
I zoomed in on this, just cuz I could, and Oh *insert religious term of choice here* THOSE TREES ARE SO FUCKING GOOD (the rest of it is too, but holy fuck, the trees).
